Artist’s Statement
I am an artist working and living in Hampshire, U.K. I create landscape paintings in mixed media. These usually come in varying uses or mixtures of oil, ink and acrylic and occasionally collage made from found materials. I love to work on big sized canvases for breadth and physicality whilst painting, but I also love working small scale both outside and sat at my table back at the studio.
The way I work is a combination of both ‘en plein air’ and studio painting. The work usually starts outside, whether as being a physical painting session or returning to a location again and again until imagery or a composition sticks in my mind. Back at the studio, I will rework the piece I have started outside, or start a painting purely by memory.
Both en plein air and memory painting sessions tend to yield different results. En plein air paintings usually pack energy and spontaneous mark making as a result of direct contact with the elements. Working from memory tends to verge more on abstraction or the piece can become more minimalist with limited use of colour, as memories of a place can become fragmented, or concentrated to a particular aspect of the place.
The places which I choose to paint can be a combination of places which I continuously find myself going back to, whether its because of pre-existing memories from childhood, having links to friends and family or that I have been affected by them emotionally. A recurring theme in my work has been engaging with places which ‘were’ and am drawn to places which have both changed over time and have stood the test of time. Sometimes it can be difficult choosing a subject to paint but I find starting with something which evokes a pre-existing story or emotional connection adds a context and a justification as to why an artist has realised an existing place in a painting.
